Battletoads is a nostalgia game that was a big hit in the 90s. It's about three toads, not a head of the Teenage mutant Ninja Turtles, which the shadowqueen must defeat to restore order.
The story The battletoads are three hilarious brothers who take on the Shadowqueen. The shadow queen announces that she wants to battle them. And of course the brothers will not accept that. They also go out on a warpath themselves. And while they do that, they will of course make noise and make delicious jokes with each other while kicking even more ass. The story is not deep but it is extremely hilarious. The interactions between the brothers and the insults they dish out to their opponents is really hilarious. The cutscenes could be a TV series, they are that good. It is important to say, the jokes are meant for adults, it is definitely not a game meant for children because the jokes usually have a sexual tinge.
The gameplay Battletoads is a 2d beat 'm up action game. You walk through the streets and kick and beat up as many opponents as possible. As the game progresses you will get more and more moves with which you can do even more damage. The longer your combo, the more experience you get with which you can unlock more skills. The nice thing about this game is that you can play it co-op with up to 3 players. Besides fighting, there are also puzzles. These puzzles start very simple, click on it, pull that lever down, but as the game goes on the puzzles get really extremely difficult. So hard, in fact, that you actually scratch your ears a few times to find out what's happening now. For example, towards the end of the game there is a puzzle that really took me 2 hours. Frustrating almost, but in the end when you get it, you also know how to handle the rest. Besides fighting and puzzling, there are also small mini races. These races mean that you have to avoid very fast and turning obstacles. And depending on your difficulty it gets faster and faster. So you have to try to avoid everything as a kind of Neo in the matrix.
The conclusion Battletoads is a really fun game especially if you play it co-op. It's nice if you just want to reset your mind and just want to button bash. The mini games offer enough variety for a fun party night. However, if you are looking for depth, complicated combos, this is not the game you are looking for. We give it a 7.
